Video : Gimme 5 Vase Gardens in 5 Different Mediums – Penny Black!

And now for something a little different!  Today’s Gimme 5 at Penny Black is all about ‘mediums’, that is, using different types to colour this beautiful Vase Garden. To make the comparison a little easier I did choose colours that looked very similar but will talk you through the process in my video below.

And here are the finished cards, starting with ‘Copics’.

30 thoughts on “Video : Gimme 5 Vase Gardens in 5 Different Mediums – Penny Black!

  1. All are beautiful, but I think I like the prismacolor, the watercolory, and the zigs the most! Thank you for the comparison it is very helpful!

  2. I enjoy your videos so much and this one in particular!!! What a lot of work!!! I love seeing the various mediums you used and how you put the cards together. I have a few inktense pencils and love them, but hardly use them (although I pulled out watercolor pencils the other day to play with and had fun … all the while thinking “Why don’t I use these more often?!!”). I’ve felt intimated by the copics and resistant to try them because of the cost. I love to watch people color using them and am getting dangerously close to trying them out!! Not sure whether to thank you or not for your comments on using them!!!!!!! Thank you so much for the video. (Been watching episodes from the show “Who Do You Think You Are?” out of Australia lately. What a fascinating part of the world you live in! I’ve long wanted to visit “down under” and hope to be able to one day.) Cheers! And Happy Autumn!

  3. Therese, you just blow me away with your colouring.
I so admire how you chose your themes and then create across so many mediums.
These five cards are all unique and each card is so very lovely.
Because of my great love of Prisma’s I’d have to say that the third card is my favourite.
Thank you for the how to videos. I love your fresh and honest approach to creating.
Seeing a notification in my emails from you is such a highlight to my working day.
I can’t tell you how much you’ve inspired my own card journey.
Looking forward to what Therese will do next.
    Cheers
    Lisa

  4. Love, love all of these! I don’t have Copics or Zig markers, but have the other mediums and after seeing your video I think that I have enough (did I really say that?) for the time being. Thanks for sharing all the tips and techniques that you find helpful. 🙂

  5. Thanks for sharing i really enjoyed your 5 mediums video. You make it look so easy! Love your work.

  6. I loved watching how you work with each medium. I only have a few Copics and while they are easiest for you, I find them quite difficult. I do love my Zigs but they can be ornery at times depending on what I’m painting. I have Inktense pencils and I mostly color brush to pencil for the best blending. I recently got PolyChromos pencils and have been practicing with them and I love them, especially on dark cardstock. Of course there’s always Distress Inks to watercolor with. Half of the fun of creating is to vary what I use.

  7. Wonderful to see your medium comparison, Therese, thanks for taking the time to share your tips with these. I hanker dreadfully for the Prismas, but, as I still have the small Derwent ColourSoft set, I cannot justify the purchase at present…My wishful bucket has now been emptied of world travel desinations, mountain peaks, flying lessons etc. and now rattles with pencils and pieces of paper…Di

  8. Wonderful comparison….I have all these mediums and this made it easier to see the differences! Thank you so much!!!!

  9. This was such a great video and project. I got a pack of Inktense pencils yesterday so tried them out with the help of your tips! I am thrilled with the results.

Keep up the great inspiring art projects!

    Thanks!

  10. They are all beautiful…I can’t pick a favourite. Thanks for the inspiration.

  11. I could watch you colour all day, Therese … no matter what medium you use! These are all gorgeous … such delicious sutble differences depending on what you used … and each one as lovely as the last! Thank you! Hugs, Anita 🙂

  12. Therese your video is a joy to watch! Wonderful showing each of the mediums. I am especially grateful for your hints about each medium. You are the BEST!!

  13. Therese, I loved watching your video and am amazed with the results you achieved with them (but I’m surprised with how similiar they all were also. Just goes to show that lovely results can be achieved no matter what media you use.) The way you turned the images into different cards was also inspirational, as with just a tweek, you make them look totally different. You are just so talented and unique in your viewpoint of art and craft. I’m sorry I’ve not been keeping up with your work lately, I’ve been sick, but I’m looking forward to seeing a lot more in the future. Love always, Janelle. 🙂

  14. Great comparison. I have no favorites of the 5. All great!
I am wondering if you would share where you got the pages in your book. That seems like a great idea to have a file of all of ones colors.
    Would you please share that?

  15. I enjoyed watching your video, the cards,no matter what coloring medium you used, are absolutely stunning… I like so much your color charts folder, very clever and helpful… it will be great if you link to these charts…
    Hugs,
    Susana

  16. Love, love, love your comparison cards! You helped me understand some of the characteristics of each medium. I liked seeing your color charts, too. A neat idea having them all at your fingertips.

  17. WOW all beautifully coloured. Couldn’t pick a fav. Thanks for reminding me I have some intense pencils that haven’t had some love for a while 🙂 (actually most of my stash! I have been MIA!)

  18. Absolutely GORGEOUS cards, Therese! I love the effects of the different medium…each one is so unique!

  19. 5 absolutely stunning cards! you make each medium look effortless and I know practice makes perfect but I really struggle with colouring (no matter what medium) that doesn’t stop me from buying them all (in every colour too) I think I love the vibrance of the zigs as my fav xxx

  20. I see you list three different black ink pads. Which pad did you use for each medium? Thanks for your help!

    1. Hi There, I used the Archival Jet Black for any of the water based colouring (ie Zigs / Watercolours / Inktense) then I used the Memento Tuxedo for the Copics and Pencils and finally I used Onyx Black for all of them I use this to ‘restamp’ the image over top at the end of colouring to crisp up the outlines – I do this by keeping my stamp in the MISTI in the same position. You can really use any black inks that you have as long as they are compatible with the medium that you are using. Thanks so much for visiting, Crafty hugs, Therese
