Today I share some shading tips using Prismacolor Pencils and I have a more ‘realistic’ image which is perfect for this technique, it’s called Orange Blossoms and is from Spellbinders, Fun Stampers Journey Stamp of the Month Club.
So, I’ve been thinking about it recently and I have come to the realisation that some of you may be a little ‘afraid’ to colour. But you know what, you have to start somewhere, and in my video below are some tricks that I know that can make it easier.
Beginning with my first tip which is to ‘Use the Image’, it will often tell you where the shading needs to be,
Don’t be afraid to come in with a very dark colour to add depth and dimension, I even used ‘Black’ here on the leaves!
And remember, these are handmade cards that we are creating, and it’s our hobby and it’s meant to be fun and not stressful. But without putting that pencil, marker or watercolour to the paper you will never improve, so just go for it!
And, here’s a Power Tip – stamp out the same image a few times and colour it again and again, either repeating the same medium or changing it up depending on your confidence, you will be surprised how you can ‘learn’ an image and improve just by colouring it a few times.

First of all, the colors are so dramatic with the black white and lovely lovely orange! I really dig it. I loved your video, great tips about adding the dark color. I always take my pencils for coloring at my craft group because they are so much smaller than markers, so I do get some use out of them, even if I usually use markers. Thanks for the tips!

The oranges came out so well. Real with so much depth.
I’ve taken to putting my successful colouring combos into a small visual arts diary.
It’s a good idea to keep a record of the disaster combos too.
I find colouring quite comforting and watching some one else colouring is quite zen for me. I often have to rewatch a YouTube video because I’ve chilled out.

Love the image Therese, stunning stamp. I agree re colouring. Mind you I’ve been addicted to it since childhood, when received my first Derwents.
When teaching I’d sit down with kids in my class and show them how to colour nicely, not sure who enjoyed it more! 😊 but colour is exciting.

Fab card. Love the black and white background with the pop of orange. 100% agree you gotta start somewhere and practice! Exactly what I intend to do when I have cleaned out the kids games cupboard and my craft room (insert a very embarrassed face there!).
