Affordable Marker Review & Demo: Best Budget Art Supplies? (+ Video)!

Not all crafting budgets are created equal, and I’ve been looking into options, and then this happened…

Ohuhu reached out to me! Which was perfect timing, as I have been researching alcohol markers to find some affordable options for crafters on a tight budget, or someone who does minimal colouring or may just want to try alcohol markers without a big financial commitment. AND, would you believe these were the ones I had in my cart.. and Ohuhu sent them to me, no strings attached, to try and share if I wanted to! This collaboration with Ohuhu is a happy coincidence, but all opinions are honest and my own.

#OHUHU

These guys have been around for a while, and I’ve been watching. Ohuhu has a focus on affordable art supplies, without the compromise on quality. But, when it came to alcohol markers, they did not have the range that other companies had, until now. That has all changed, and after watching reviews by some of the leading influencers I was intrigued… and, I’m wondering if you’d like to know my Pros and Cons?

Now Let’s talk Colouring!

My first impressions colouring with these markers… I enjoyed them. To keep the playing field fair, I used Neenah 80lb cardstock which is what I have typically used for alcohol marker colouring. I started by swatching out all of the colours, not only to get a feel for the markers, but usually colour caps are not a good indication of the true marker colours.
PRO TIP: I would always recommend swatching your alcohol markers AND, make sure you use the paper that you would normally colour on.

Like any new toy, there is always a learning curve, the brush nibs felt very similar to other brands that I own, not too hard and not too flexible (goldilocks). A couple of the markers felt a little ‘scratchy’ when I swatched them, almost like they were dry, but the colour still flowed easily onto the paper. I did see that Ohuhu have a disclaimer if you recieve any ‘dry/defective’ markers that they would like you to reach out to their support for a ‘solution’ (not exactly sure what that involves but if anyone has experience with this ‘solution’ we would all like to know).

I purposely chose colours that weren’t too similar to see how they would ‘blend’ and initially I felt like I didn’t come in with enough colour on my first flower. But that’s the great thing about markers, is that you can re-colour and re-mix overtop if you need, and that’s exactly what I did. My second flower felt much ‘easier’ to colour. Overall I was happy with how the markers blended.

The brush nib has a nice fine point, but it felt a little different to me. Initially, I found that I was colouring outside the stamped lines of the image in the ‘tight spots’, but once I slowed down and got a little more comfortable with the balance and feel of the marker, this definitely improved. I feel like I was trying to colour exactly as I would with my other markers, and guess what, it’s not exactly the same 🙄.

My final impressions for my very first colouring session with these markers, it was fun! Great choice of colours in the set I recieved, the colours I chose blended nicely and for a budget-line product I wouldn’t be disappointed in this as a purchase.

But, like all mediums, play, play, play… what is the worst thing that could happen, it’s only paper!

Ohuhu? Have you got them? Tried them… or avoided them? I’d love to know your experience with this brand and if you would recommend them or not. Do you have any favourite sets you would recommend and do you have any tips and tricks on how you use them?
