Altenew April 2023 Stamp/Die/Stencil & More Release Blog Hop + Giveaway ($300 total in prizes)!

Do you like a bit of shine on your designs? Today my cards have a ‘golden edge’!

But first, this post is part of a Hop celebrating a new release from Altenew and you can find all of the hop details in the link list below!

Both of my card designs have an embossed golden edge for the image. And today I am sharing some tips with you, on how to get this ‘look’!

Idea #1 – Alcohol Markers

My first technique is to add colour using Altenew Artist Markers. You may already know that alcohol markers do not play ‘friendly’ with heat embossing. But what if you still want this ‘WOW factor’ look?

Altenew - Billowing Peonies (card) (3) copy

The achieve this, stamp the image in a light alcohol marker-friendly ink first. Then colour as you normally would and restamp the image with Embossing Ink and heat emboss. I used Antique Gold Embossing Powder on this card.

PRO TIP: Using a stamp positioning tool, such as the Stampwheel, will make this technique a breeze.

I added my Striking Flower bloom to a Dark Gray background with some Antique Gold sequins and a sentiment from the Sweet Bouquet Stamp Set.

Idea #2 – Layering Stencils

Another great way to add colour to an embossed image is to use layering stencils.

This set is HUGE, it’s probably the BIGGEST stamp set I have ever used and it’s stunning! I cannot resist Altenew’s peonies and this one is called Billowing Peonies and beware there are a stack of stencils 😉, but they are easy to use!

Altenew - Striking Flowers - Sweet Bouquet (card) (3) copy

The great thing about stencils and embossing is that you can either use them after embossing or you can repeat the technique that I used with the markers (colour first, then emboss). This time I used the beautiful Golden Peach Embossing Powder.

PRO TIP: If you decide to add the embossing after ink blending make sure that the ink is completely dry by pouring some embossing powder over top to make sure it isn’t ‘sticking’. If it is, then use a powder tool (or some cornstarch / baby powder) to deactivate the ink and test it again.

I also added an embossed sentiment from the same set die cut with a Nesting Labels Die.

BONUS IDEA: Embossed images such as this are perfect for watercolouring!
