Not all crafting budgets are created equal, and I’ve been looking into options, and then this happened…
Ohuhu reached out to me! Which was perfect timing, as I have been researching alcohol markers to find some affordable options for crafters on a tight budget, or someone who does minimal colouring or may just want to try alcohol markers without a big financial commitment. AND, would you believe these were the ones I had in my cart.. and Ohuhu sent them to me, no strings attached, to try and share if I wanted to! This collaboration with Ohuhu is a happy coincidence, but all opinions are honest and my own.

#OHUHU
These guys have been around for a while, and I’ve been watching. Ohuhu has a focus on affordable art supplies, without the compromise on quality. But, when it came to alcohol markers, they did not have the range that other companies had, until now. That has all changed, and after watching reviews by some of the leading influencers I was intrigued… and, I’m wondering if you’d like to know my Pros and Cons?
PROS
- They have a HUGE range of colours (363 colours in Honolulu)!
- Available as individual markers and in sets (from 24 to 320 markers)
- Afforability, price per marker is very low (especially if you buy a set).
- Dual ended markers.
- Great choice of nib combinations (my favourite is Brush & Chisel)
- Reversible Brush (sketch) nib… AWEsome! Just flip it around when it becomes worn.
- And, you can buy replacement Brush nibs.
- Round body marker is comfortable and it has a ‘non-roll’ cap (and it works).
- Colour number and names are written on both lids
- Some refill colours are available.
- Comes with a swatch card, but a free downloadable swatch is also available.
- The BEST thing is that these markers can be combined and will work beautifully with any brand of alcohol marker that you already own. So it’s all about, what colours that you want in your stash!
- FAST postage… they arrived at my door the next day, seriously!
CONS
- They have a HUGE range of colours so it may get confusing. Start with knowing your budget, then choose what combination of nibs you like and I would choose a set that has a combination of light and bright colours, with a few from each colour family.
- Coloured caps on the marker do not always show the true marker colour.
- The colour number/name is not written on the barrel (just in case you have both caps off at the same time).
- Marker numbering system seems a little confusing.
- A few of the marker colours seem very similar.
- I don’t know about light fastness, but for a cardmaker, these are typically not works of art to be displayed on walls. Though, many artists do use these markers (I’d love to know their experience with this).
- Marker refills, not all colours currently available.
Now Let’s talk Colouring!
My first impressions colouring with these markers… I enjoyed them. To keep the playing field fair, I used Neenah 80lb cardstock which is what I have typically used for alcohol marker colouring. I started by swatching out all of the colours, not only to get a feel for the markers, but usually colour caps are not a good indication of the true marker colours.
PRO TIP: I would always recommend swatching your alcohol markers AND, make sure you use the paper that you would normally colour on.
Like any new toy, there is always a learning curve, the brush nibs felt very similar to other brands that I own, not too hard and not too flexible (goldilocks). A couple of the markers felt a little ‘scratchy’ when I swatched them, almost like they were dry, but the colour still flowed easily onto the paper. I did see that Ohuhu have a disclaimer if you recieve any ‘dry/defective’ markers that they would like you to reach out to their support for a ‘solution’ (not exactly sure what that involves but if anyone has experience with this ‘solution’ we would all like to know).

I purposely chose colours that weren’t too similar to see how they would ‘blend’ and initially I felt like I didn’t come in with enough colour on my first flower. But that’s the great thing about markers, is that you can re-colour and re-mix overtop if you need, and that’s exactly what I did. My second flower felt much ‘easier’ to colour. Overall I was happy with how the markers blended.
The brush nib has a nice fine point, but it felt a little different to me. Initially, I found that I was colouring outside the stamped lines of the image in the ‘tight spots’, but once I slowed down and got a little more comfortable with the balance and feel of the marker, this definitely improved. I feel like I was trying to colour exactly as I would with my other markers, and guess what, it’s not exactly the same 🙄.

My final impressions for my very first colouring session with these markers, it was fun! Great choice of colours in the set I recieved, the colours I chose blended nicely and for a budget-line product I wouldn’t be disappointed in this as a purchase.

But, like all mediums, play, play, play… what is the worst thing that could happen, it’s only paper!
Ohuhu? Have you got them? Tried them… or avoided them? I’d love to know your experience with this brand and if you would recommend them or not. Do you have any favourite sets you would recommend and do you have any tips and tricks on how you use them?

Lovely card…I own other markers, but looking forward to hearing how others like these markers!
I’m interested too Janet, and so far I haven’t had a negative comment!
I just got some (168 set) and cannot find the swatch sheet on their website. Any idea how to find it?
It’s called ‘Color Cards Download’ and is at the very bottom of the Ohuhu website page. Here is the link https://au.ohuhu.com/pages/ohuhu-marker-set-blank-color-cards-download Hope this helps, Tx
I have them and love them.Your tutorial was very informative and hope with practice I can achieve similar results. Thanks for sharing your talent with us.
How wonderful! I am so happy you like them, I haven’t had a negative response yet!!
I enjoyed your video! I bought a set of 96 Ohuhu markers probably a year ago, if not more. Use them quite a bit and they are still going strong. Thanks for the tip about turning the nib around!!I did swatch them which is almost a must!!
I agree, a swatch is your greatest friend lol.
Helpful video thanks. @amyswares also did a video recently in these ohuhu markers. She seemed to like them too. No one states how these should be stored. Even the website doesn’t say. Since they come with a bag can they be stored upright or do they need to be laid horizontal/flat? Thanks again for the video.
Hi Nan, I did see something about their storage today! “To keep your Ohuhu markers in tip-top condition, store them in a cool place without exposure to direct sunlight or strong UV rays to prevent the colour of the ink to fade. Also, as our ink is alcohol based, ensure that they are capped and stored away from fire or any flammable substances.”
I know many crafters who store their Copics vertically, I prefer horizontal (cause it makes sense – but there is a pad in the centre which soaks up the ink), so I think it really doesn’t matter. Hope this helps, Crafty hugs, Therese
The images you coloured look amazing Therese. I have full sets of both Copic and Altenew markers, so I’m not really interested in purchasing, but it’s always interesting to learn how alternatives perform.
If you have a full set of Copic and Altenew then you need for nothing, you have every colour combo possible. I like that I can combine these with my markers, but I feel it’s the lighter colours that I am missing (or maybe I am just telling myself that lol.)
Just loved your colouring of the floral image. Looking forward to see how these markers feel for myself. Doing a little research but have a friend who’s new to alcohol markers so I’m going to flip the post to her.
Crafty hugs
I love the markers that I have and it’s great that I can combine them. But I think it’s the pastel ones that would truly complement the Altenew markers as their colours are very strong (especially in the older sets). Ps I’m trying not to buy the pastel set right now lol.
The results are quite stunning, not to mention your coloring skills!
You are so sweet, thank you x
Thanks for this video. I actually started with the Ohuhu pastel set and loved them so much that I bought the set you used. I do find they are easy to use, juicy and very affordable. I got the brush and point tip. I tend to use the brush most of the time but usually for tiny spaces I find the point tip works well. One recommendation is that they need to include more reds in the 120 set. Also as you noted, some colours look very similar.
Thank you for your thoughtful feedback, except you know that now I ‘need’ that pastel set lol.
Incredible colouring and looks so pretty, I’ve never heard of Ohuhu markers – was interested in your findings too. Wonderful make ! hugs xx
Thank you Angellica!
