Shaker cards are interactive, fun, and full of personality, but pairing them with embossed backgrounds adds an extra layer of texture and fun. In this tutorial, I’ll walk you step by step so you can create a card that’s not only beautiful but also brings a little surprise when the sequins start moving.

Shaker Card Tips & Hacks

  • Pick the perfect window size: Make sure that the window is large enough to show your design and be a good size for your shaker elements. Windows can be a die cut shape or cut using a craft knife or paper trimmer.
  • Use foam tape: Ensure your shaker bits such as sequins have enough space to move freely without getting stuck. I often ‘double up’ foam tape for extra dimension.
  • Create a Full Seal: Attach the acetate securely so nothing escapes. Also make sure that the foam tape edges touch to make a complete ‘well’ to hold the shaker bits.
  • Add texture with embossing folders: Step up your backgrounds by ink-blending embossed backgrounds to give your shaker a wow factor.
  • Include small details: Die-cut birds, tiny flowers, or leaves on the sentiment add charm.
  • Mix up the Shake: Step outside of a sequin shaker, try some clay shaker elements or even die cut small images, or even numbers, for a fun idea. Pro Tip: Light elements move better and create more eye-catching motion!

Ready to Shake?

I don’t normally add a textured background behind a shaker window, but these 3D embossing folders are totally addictive! It was quick and easy to color the bouquet by ink-blending through stencils, and it really gave the shaker that extra something, something.

I used a fun new “window” shaker die that made it super easy to align the oval perfectly on my A2 panel. But the best part? This die can also be used independently – pop it onto any size panel for a shaker window, it’s incredibly versatile!

I’m smitten with this sweet little parrot, but don’t feel limited! You could easily switch it up with a cluster of flowers, a cheerful butterfly, or any tiny detail that makes you smile. It’s an easy way to put your own twist on the card.

These shaker cards are such a fun way to add a little movement to your creations. Don’t be afraid to mix up the elements, play with textures, and make it totally your own!

  1. Well this shaker looks fine and dandy. Truth be told you had me at shaker 😹. Sorry I missed the live this morning, email demons strike again.
    Crafty hugs

  2. Your card makes me smile ~ GAH… what a sweet little bird he is! This is a fun filled shaker, Therese and so very cute! I have to mention I noticed all of the Lisas commenting. It must be some kind of record!

    1. Hi Donna, it’s an old container that I repurposed… from memory I may have bought it Spotlight or Lincraft in Australia, I like that it has separate compartments and ‘curved’ base so the sequins don’t get stuck in the corners. Hope you can find something similar Hugs Therese
