Using Basic Shapes to Make an Interactive Shark Card – LIVE Video!

Did you know that Basic Shapes can be scary?

And I would never have thought to make this scary card, except when met with a certain group of parameters

I had the opportunity to join Craft Roulette for World Card Making Day (WCMD) and with only 30 minutes to make this card, there was certainly that feeling of ‘time’ pressure… luckily we were given the parameters before the event, so I planned out a fun Basic Shapes card to share!

Would you like to see my card, and the 4 parameters?

I was so happy to see you at the show, but if you did miss it don’t worry, you can watch the replay. If you want to watch the WHOLE 7 hour show click right HERE, or click below for a direct link to see MY card.

If you don’t have a clue what I am talking about, you can find out ALL about Craft Roulette right HERE.

Do you think the Mr Wheel was kind? I was just happy that there were no robots to deal with. But, I’d love to know, what you could do with these…

  • Project – Saying Hi: Nailed it! I ‘Australianised’ it with a simple G’day.
  • Colors – Crisp: I went with a ‘Crisp’ Winter’s day, think blues, blue-grey, grey and a deep yellow for the sun.
  • Element – Sun/Sunny(les): An easy one – I added a sun in the sky.
  • Random – Pennants: Enter the idea of shark teeth… and that is how this ‘scary’ card was born!

#BASICSHAPES

There is no need to have a specific image die to create something fun. I love to use Basic Shapes to create my own elements and images and this works particularly well using dies. And, if you have shaped nesting dies these are even better, because you have ALL the sizes to choose from.

Ovals:
This ‘buck-toothed’ shark was created using a combination of different styles of nesting oval dies. With the top layer double-die cut to create the head and mouth.

Triangles:
I thought about using triangle dies to create the teeth and fins, but with a 30 minute limit I knew that would take too long to die cut. It was easier to pencil some fins and ‘pennant’ triangle teeth then fussy cut them with fine scissors.

PRO TIP: Don’t have triangle dies? A quick and easy option would be to die cut some stars = multiple teeth in one roll of the die cut machine handle!

Circles:
I stepped it up a little with this shape. Instead of a die I used a circle stencil which gave me both the negative and postive mask to create the sun.

PRO TIP: Don’t have a circle stencil? Die cut a circle from masking paper and use the positive and negative portions in the same manner.

Interactive:
And I couldn’t resist… I had to add an ‘Action Wobble’, I think Bruce needed it. 😉

Thank you to both Mary and Stephen for inviting me to play again, you made World Card Making Day special for me, and for so many others! If you want to see how everyone was inspired by these parameters then check out the cards uploaded into the Contribution Gallery HERE.

Hope your World Card Making Day was Amazing too!

  1. Therese, your card took a big bite out of those parameters! Perfect timing, too as it’s the 50th anniversary of JAWS!

    1. Oh my, I wish I was that fast, we did have the parameters before the show, but I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to make the card in time, YAY I did get it done!
