Embossing with Dies: Create a Trellis Background Card (+ LIVE Video)

No embossing folder? No problem.

Today I’m sharing how I used my dies to emboss this trellis background for subtle texture and dimension – and I created it live.

This was a collaboration with Altenew, sharing sneak peeks of the upcoming Secret Garden Retreat. The best part? These techniques can easily be used with products already in your stash. Scroll down for my discount code if you’d like to join me at the retreat!

Curious to see how it works?

Embossing with Dies

Embossing with dies is an easy way to add patterns and texture to your background without cutting through the cardstock.

HOW TO EMBOSS WITH DIES

  • Refer to your die-cutting machine guide for the correct embossing sandwich.
  • Use low-tack tape to secure the die to the cardstock.
  • Place the die (with the cardstock attached) face up on your platform.
  • Add a rubber or embossing mat on top.
  • Place an adapter plate or cutting plate on top, as directed by your manufacturer.
  • Run it through your die-cutting machine.
  • There should be minimal pressure. If it feels difficult to crank, stop and check your sandwich.
  • Remove the tape and die to reveal the debossed impression.

Card Inspiration – Embossed Trellis Background

The trellis die includes two separate pieces, which means you can cut them together for a full panel or use them individually for more layout flexibility. It’s such a versatile design feature. And to be honest, you can use any combination of florals with this design.

The coordinating vines and blooms are a perfect match for the trellis, and I added simple ink blending to the die-cut leaves and flowers to bring in soft colour and depth.

PRO TIP: Place tape along the outer edges or in areas that will be covered, in case removal slightly marks the cardstock.
