If your scrap drawer won’t close… you’re not alone!
Today I’m sharing a fun strip background card idea using paper scraps. This design was actually inspired by one of the scrap sketches I created while preparing my freebie for the Paper Crafters Get Organized Summit – more about that soon!
But first, let’s take a look at today’s card.

And if you’d like to see how this card came together, you can watch the video here or watch it on YouTube.

Turning Paper Scraps into a Fun Background
Those colourful leftovers seem too good to throw away, but before you know it they’re overflowing and taking over your craft space. That’s exactly why I had to include a striped background as part of my sketch freebie ideas. It’s one of my go-to designs for a fun background and a great way to use up scraps.
Card Sketch #1 – Strips into Stripes
When cutting down paper pads for card panels, there are always leftover strips – and these are perfect for creating quick and easy striped backgrounds.

I often choose papers from the same paper pack so everything coordinates beautifully, or mix things up by adding solid coloured cardstock to fill in the gaps.
BONUS IDEA: Step up this easy design by adding texture with a graphic-style embossing folder.

Sketches are a great place to start when you want to put your scraps to work, and that’s exactly why I created a set of scrap sketches as part of my freebie for the summit.
Would you believe that I don’t actually have a ton of scraps? It’s true! Over time I’ve found a system that helps me sort, store, and actually use those leftover pieces before they start taking over my craft space.
That’s why I’m excited that the Paper Crafters Get Organized Summit is back!
In my session, The Smart Scrap System: Purge, Store & Let Go, I’ll be sharing simple ways to manage those leftover bits so they stay useful instead of becoming clutter.
Want to join the summit and find out all the details?
Over to You!
Are you going to grab your scraps and turn those strips into stripes? I’d love to see how this sketch inspires you, so don’t forget to share.
I look forward to sharing more ideas with you at the summit!

Special thanks to my crafty assistant, Chad (aka ChatGPT), for helping me stay on track with my Gemini brain, grammar, and spelling… well, all the things!
