Textured Cardmaking Ideas
Adding texture is one of the easiest ways to bring a card design to life. It’s what takes a project from looking flat to feeling layered and interesting… even if you’re using simple supplies.
There are so many ways to add texture too — from raised details with embossing and paste, to subtle pressed patterns and layered elements that build depth without adding bulk. The best part is, you don’t need to use them all at once. Just choosing one or two can completely change the look and feel of your card.
In today’s cards, I’ve mixed a few different texture techniques to create two elegant designs — each with its own style and personality.
✨ 5 Easy Ways to Add Texture to Your Cards
- Embossing folders: Create instant raised detail for backgrounds or frames.
- Heat embossing: Add shine and a slightly raised finish with embossing powder.
- Stencil + paste: Build dimension with texture or embossing paste through a stencil.
- Layered die cuts: Stack shapes or frames to create depth without bulk.
- Debossing: Press patterns into cardstock for a soft, subtle texture.
- Bonus idea: Add a soft, touchable finish for a little extra surprise!
Card #1 – Embossing Folder & Heat Embossing
For my first card, I wanted something elegant but still easy to pull together – and an embossing folder is one of my favourite ways to get there fast.
I used it to create a feature frame, and honestly… it does most of the work for you. Just adding that bit of dimension instantly makes the card feel more finished.

To dress it up, I rubbed a little gold shimmer over the raised details (because if you can add gold… why wouldn’t you 😄). It catches the light beautifully and really brings out the texture.

I also added some gold heat embossing to tie everything together – just enough shine to make it feel a little fancy without going over the top.
And of course, I couldn’t resist a few gold splatters to finish it off!

Card #2 – Stencilled Texture & Layered Details
For my second card… I may have got a little carried away 😄
Instead of using an embossing folder, I added texture to the background by running my stencil through the die cutting machine. It gives this really soft, wallpaper-style effect that’s subtle but still adds so much interest.

I kept building from there, adding a simple layered frame to create a little “window” feature (with vellum behind it for a softer look). It helps draw your eye in without feeling too heavy.
Then for a bit of extra detail, I used gold shimmer paste through the stencil on the flower centres – such a small thing, but it adds just the right amount of shine and texture.

This card ended up being a mix of soft layers, subtle texture and a few special details… and I love how it all came together.

Bonus Idea – A Little Something Extra…
Did you notice something soft and luxurious about these chairs…?
I added a flocked finish to the seats to give them that velvet look – and honestly, this might be my favourite texture of all. It’s such a fun way to add something a little unexpected to your cards.
You can use flocking in so many different ways too, not just for furniture. Try it on:
- flower centres
- critters (perfect for adding fur!)
- beards and hair
- clothing like scarves or beanies
- even small accents or details you want to stand out
It’s one of those techniques that’s just fun to play with… and a little bit goes a long way!
Which Texture Will You Try First?
I hope these ideas inspire you to add a little texture to your own cards! It really doesn’t take much to make a big difference – even one simple technique can completely change the look and feel of your design.
I’d love to hear which texture you would try first… or are you going straight for the bonus? 😄 Let me know in the comments!
