What if your card could feel like a window into an underwater world?
Today I’m sharing two ways to frame an underwater scene – one with a fishbowl shaker card, and one with a dramatic spotlight reef technique. Same kit, same ocean theme… two very different ways to frame the scene. And yes, we’re shaking things up first!
Let’s take a look at today’s cards.

Two Ways to Frame an Underwater Scene
Sometimes changing the way you look at a product can completely change the card you create. Instead of using every element in the obvious way, think about what you want your design to feel like, then look for ways to stretch the idea – turn shapes into frames, use light to guide the eye, or choose one feature to become the star.
Card #1 – Fishbowl Shaker Card
For my first card, I used the fishbowl shaker card design as the frame for my underwater scene. The partial die-cut circle creates the bowl shape, while the acetate and shaker fill add that fun “looking through water” feel.

I built the reef inside the bowl using the coral stencils and a coordinating embossing folder, then added another stencil at the top to create the waterline. This helps frame the underwater scene and gives the card that “looking into the water” feel.

Did you see the excited little anemone fish jumping back into the water? I think he’s having the best time creating all those bubbles!
BONUS IDEA: Add a tiny party hat or bow tie to the fish, or change the sentiment to turn this fishbowl shaker card into a fun birthday card.

Card #2 – Spotlight Reef Card
For my second card, I used light as the frame – literally! I drew a spotlight in the silhouette diver’s hand, then masked off a ‘beam of light’ and ink blended inside that area to highlight the coral reef.

The rest of the panel was ink blended in blue-greens, with the surrounding coral kept darker so it looks more like a silhouette. This helps the brighter reef section stand out and gives the underwater scene that “lit by a spotlight” effect.

I also had a little red ink mishap while blending, but it turned into a happy accident. The tiny dots of red spread through the ocean around the coral, and it reminded me of seeing coral spawning when I used to go diving.

Try Framing It Differently
I hope this inspires you to look at your supplies in a new way and think about how you can frame your next card design. A shaker window, a spotlight, a bold shape, or even a happy accident can completely change the feel of your card.
I’d love to know have you ever had a crafty mishap turn into a favourite detail?

I had a goldfish who jumped out of his bowl, but the ending wasn’t nearly as fun as yours, Therese! Both cards are like amazing! Someone at Altenew has seen Finding Nemo more than once! I love that little Clown fish!

Both of these are INSANE! Love the colors, love the blending, and that fishbowl is beyond spectacular!
