Who says simple cards have to play it safe? Today we’re piling on the poinsettia texture!
Today we’re adding plenty of texture with two poinsettia Christmas cards featuring embossing, sparkle and a little shimmer!
This is Week 2 of my Simple Cards with Something Extra: 4 Ways to Step Up Your Cards mini series. Last week we added movement to our simple card designs, and this week it’s all about texture.
Would you like a peek at today’s cards?

Textured Poinsettia Christmas Cards
Adding texture to a simple card design is such an easy way to make it feel a little more special. It adds interest and detail without necessarily adding lots of extra work.
Sometimes embossing is all you need to completely change the look of a card – and you can leave it as is, or dress it up with a little sparkle, shimmer or paste.
EASY WAYS TO ADD TEXTURE
- Embossing folders
- Embossing or texture paste
- Shimmer and sparkle
- Chunky glitter
- Flocking
- Fabric such as felt
Card #1 – Layered Textured Poinsettia
Usually when I think about embossing folders, I think backgrounds – but they can be used for so much more. They’re also a great way to add texture to die-cut elements… such as poinsettia leaves. 😉
This particular poinsettia has a coordinating die and embossing folder set, which makes adding all that lovely detail incredibly easy.

And why stop there? I added a little sugary sparkle around the edges for an extra frosty finish. I was inspired by Lydia, who created an even more frosty version which I can only find at the shop site here.

For even more texture, I also embossed the background panel – but flipped it over and used the reverse debossed side for something a little different.
PRO TIP: You don’t need a coordinating poinsettia set to try this idea. Use leaf dies with a subtle, neutral-pattern embossing folder to create your own textured poinsettia.

Card #2 – Shimmery Embossed Poinsettia
For this second card, I let the embossing folder do almost all the work. A 3D poinsettia design adds plenty of texture in one quick step, making it perfect when you want something fast.

I sped things up by starting with bright pink cardstock, then added depth to the embossed design by ink blending with purple and navy – yes, navy! – ink.

To dress up the raised areas, I added a light swipe of gold shimmery embossing paste. It catches the texture beautifully without covering up all that gorgeous embossed detail.
Both cards were finished with golden die-cut sentiments for that final festive touch.

If choosing colors is the part that slows you down when you are making simple card designs, I’ve got something to help with that too.
