Heat Embossing is a fabulous tool in our arsenal, but are you using it enough? Today I have 6 techniques to share… and if you hang around until the end you may even catch my BONUS technique (which was totally new to me)!

Welcome to my Same But Different Christmas Card Series 2022! I’m so excited to be here HOTTING things up on your Holiday projects.

All of today’s cards were created with some wonderful new products from the new Catherine Pooler release, and I feel very lucky to be asked to Guest Design!

Technique #1 – Emboss Resist

An oldie but a goodie! The Holly Jolly layering stamp set was perfect for this technique. I was able to emboss one of the patterns, blend some ink then die cut the holly leaves.

BONUS TIP: You could create a similar look by stamping the layers as inteded and emboss the pattern over top.

Technique #2 – Emboss a Die Cut

Did you know that you can emboss a die cut? I added multiple layers of Ebony Embossing Powder

This is a fun technique that adds dimension and shine and you can use this on shapes as well as words.

Technique #3 – Add Sparkle!

Firstly I created my own cardstock by swiping the fabulous Catherine Pooler Inks on some white cardstock. Then to create the sparkle I added some Embossing Ink and some glitter with Clear Embossing Powder.

Creating your own cardstock is a great way to get ‘matching’ card for your inks, but you could use cardstock from your stash for a similar result.

Technique #4 – Emboss Dye Ink

If you have Clear Embossing Powder then you can emboss any colour you like. It is very easy just to re-stamp overtop with Embossing Ink and heat embossing.

Technique #5 – Double Heat Embossing

Yes, this is a thing. The Misti has made this technique even easier as the first layer of embossing is slippery to stamp on, but with the stamp positioner that is no longer a problem. Gotta love layering stamps!

PRO TIP: Use a combination of colours that will work well together and be sure not to overheat the second layer of embossing powder.

Technique #6 – Add Highlights

An embossing pen such as the Versamarker allows you to be very specific about where you can add small detailed embossed sections to an image.

For this image I simply used clear embossing powder which made the ink look darker, but you could also use a coordinating coloured embossing powder, or even a clear sparkle.

BONUS TECHNIQUE – Embossing Double-sided Tape

Hello? Yes, the green border here is actually 1/8″ double sided tape which I added embossing powder to and heat set.

What a unique and fun way to add an embossed border… think of the possibilities!

I’m so excited to have the opportunity to share these fab new products from Catherine Pooler! And build on my Christmas card stash…. did you know it’s September?

I hope you are inspired to try some heat embossing on your Christmas cards, and I’d love you to let me know which technique or card is your favourite!

  1. I nearly plotzed when I looked at the calendar, Therese!! A few days of creating Christmas cards like you do by the sixes and you’ll be ready – I think I should follow suit!
Every design is like a present, my friend! LOVE the color combo!
    =]

  2. Thank you my friend, Yes, I can’t believe that it’s halfway through September… I do not want to be ‘rushing’ this year… but I think I say that every year lol. (except last year Yay!)

  3. You must be nearly finished with your Christmas cards, so organised! Lovely modern cards and great ideas.

  4. Love the Christmas series, thank you for bringing it again. Great to be shown all the ways to emboss as well.

  5. Such simple but impactful cards, Therese. So glad you added that bonus technique. I’ll be embossing my tape too.

  6. I am so far behind in commentating please forgive my tardiness plus you are so prolific and can’t keep up. Thank you so much for your tips on embossing you really have inspired me to get them out again with this fabulous array of ccards.

  7. Therese,
WOW, so glad I watched your video. It gave me so many great ideas that I had never thought of or seen before. I especially loved using the embossing powder on the adhesive strips, I will really be trying that technique. Thanks

    1. The fine dot adhesive that I have is called Sticky Specks and you can buy it here in Australia (these are my affiliate links but if you didn’t want to use them then you could do a google search for them by name)

But this one from Thermoweb called Sticky Dots from Ellen Hutson looks very similar and I plan to try this one next time

      I hope this helps you,
Have the most wonderful and crafty day!
