5 CREATIVE Ways to Use Cardstock Scraps with a BONUS Technique! + Video!

What do you do with your cardstock scraps? Let’s smash your scrap stash… but check out my BONUS technique, it may even be new to you!

Welcome to my Same But Different Series, with a difference. No Christmas sparkle in sight, well, not until later this year… But, I have been requested to share ongoing inspiration throughout the year so I’m starting it off with a thrifty idea!

………………

Idea #1 – Layered Dies

Many companies create dies that you can layer to make images such as these sweet Sulfur Cosmos flowers. These dies are quite small and you can use either large or small scraps to make the flowers. I think the patterned paper is a fun addition.

I kept this design simple and added a layered sentiment from the Versatile Greetings Die Set.

PRO TIP: If you need to alter the colour of your design paper you can do this with markers, pencils, or ink blending!

Idea #2 – Repeat Design

Repeating a die cut to create a design is a great ‘go-to’ for me, but using scrap cardstock to do it, that makes it an even better option.

I used one of the Tropical Leaf Mix Dies, but a floral or leaf stem would also look amazing. The foiled sentiment is from the Way With Words Set.

Idea #3 – Cardstock Blocking

Have you heard of ‘colour blocking’, this is the Cardstock version of that. I always seem to have multiple strips of card scraps and this is an easy and fun way to block them into a panel.

But I wanted to take it a step further. I decided to create a negative space sentiment using the Hi die from Mondo Hello.

Idea #4 – Background

An oldie but a goodie. Backgrounds are always a wonderful way to use scrap cardstock. I loved using the Essential Hexagon shape here to make it unique.

I also added a Fancy Enjoy sentiment and some Satin Gold Sequins.

PRO TIP: If you use cardstock from the same paper pack they will coordinate beautifully… but, don’t forget to check the reverse side for more pattern options.

Idea #5 – Make it Personal

Add a name to the card front! And make it big, bright, and bold, this is especially great for children’s or teen cards.

I took it a step further and decided to stamp some Dazzling Dahlia line art in the background. But you could colour this to coordinate with the cardstock scraps that you use in the die cuts, wouldn’t that be pretty?

BONUS IDEA – Foil Design Paper

And the technique you have all been waiting for… insert drumroll here… did you know that you can add toner foil to certain cardstocks? Altenew’s Essential Black & White cardstock is the perfect example, and the Pale Gold Toner Foil from Crafty Critta didn’t let me down.

Really? You ask… are you being SERIOUS? The answer is, YES I am, you can check it out in the video linked below 😉!

I finished this card with some ‘scrappy’ flowers, made from the Layered Floral Elements Die Set. As well as a sentiment from the Sentiment Strips 2 Stamp Set.

  1. Every single card/design idea is a keeper, Therese! I’m particularly fond of idea #4 – have always had a soft spot for those hexagons – and another great pro tip to use both sides of those designer papers!
    =]

      1. All ideas were great and I loved all the cards but my favorite would be the foiling card Thanks Therese for sharing all your ideas with us

  2. Dear Teresa
Loving all the cards and that bonus card!
Sorry I missed the live but watched it later.
    Cheers
    Lisa

  3. They are all such great ideas and wonderful cards, Therese, but my favorites is the Cosmos. I only wish my scraps were as lovely as yours but I’m going to start searching.

    1. I’m sure they are Bobby, I was really surprised at just how many pieces of ‘scrap’ cardstock that I had, even after the big cull of 2022! Hope you have fun with yours x

  4. POW! you blew my mind with foiling on Altenew’s Essential Black and White paper! I have that paper pack and I love it, but now I can add foil??? get outta town! LOVE ALL your ideas!
I am guilty of hoarding my pretty papers. In some cases, I have multiple packs so I don’t run out. But how can I run out if I don’t use them, right?
So here is my New Year’s Resolution for 2023: USE UP THOSE PRETTY PAPER PACKS AND SCRAPS!
PS- so funny to see you in a summer top. Here in Minnesota we have been snowshoeing and I have to wear my long johns, flannel lined pants and down jacket to take a walk in the neighborhood! Put the kettle on, I’m heading over to your place for a crafting session! 🙂

    1. hahaha I’ll put the kettle on, but you definitely won’t need all of those layers…. I was acutally thinking about putting the air conditioning on soon lol. Love that you are going to use those papers, I am definitely on a mission myself and feel very inspired to make another video soon. then I can use some more of my papers too! Sending warm crafty hugs your way June x

  5. Love your techniques and using up scraps. Yes, please, more like this would be great!
