5 MORE CREATIVE Ways to Use Cardstock Scraps with a BONUS Technique! + Video!

Would you like MORE ideas to use your cardstock scraps? And, don’t forget to check out today’s BONUS technique… did you guess this one?

Welcome back to another ‘scrappy’ Same But Different video! You are all like my favourite children, so, if you ask for something then you get it. And here it is, 5 more Paper Scrap ideas for cardmaking!

………………

These are some of my tried and tested techniques that may be new to you, or a reminder of some that you have tried before. Starting with a floral…

Idea #1 – Inlay Die Cutting

Many companies create outline dies, such as this gorgeous Anemones bouquet, in which you can ‘inlay’ the pieces like a puzzle. These inlay pieces are a perfect way to use your scraps, as you only need a piece large enough to die cut the portion of paper in the colour you need.

I used cardstock from the same paper pack for this design as I knew they would coordinate well. Then I added a simple ‘hello’ from the Wonderful Script Sentiments.

PRO TIP: This technique is fabulous for postage friendly card designs as you can make it ‘one layer’.

Idea #2 – Colouring on Design Paper

This is such a fun technique and a great way to stretch your cardstock scraps. Simply stamp an image and colour it as you normally would with pencils. Make sure to use cardstock that isn’t heavily patterned and have a scrap piece off to the side to test pencil colours as they will look slightly different on the coloured cardstock.

I used the Rainbows Sampler and a cute Penny Black image called Friendship.

BONUS TIP: Did you know that you can make any sentiment into a speech bubble? I show you how in the video linked below.

Idea #3 – Paper Piecing

This is a ‘classic’ way to use your scraps. And, it can be used for many different styles of images but my fave is ‘critters’ like this Caffeinated: Fox. Simply stamp your image multiple times, starting with your white base layer and also again for each layer of the design papers you wish to use. It’s as easy a fussy cutting each of these out and adhering them to your base image.

I used my Copics to add colour to the image, but for a fast and fun look why not leave the image as ‘line art’.

PRO TIP: You can take this technique to the next level by adding some simple shading/highlights to the fussy cut design paper layers.

Idea #4 – Layering Stencils

Have you ever tried using ‘Layering Stencils’ on design paper? For my next design I joined 3 pieces of scrap cardstock to create a patterned background and then I was able to ink blend the layers of the Bitterroot Flower bouquet as per usual but with the subtle pattern showing through. This gives a unique look to the card and the bouquet.

I also added a Sweet Sentiments ‘Thanks’ and some Satin Gold Sequins.

PRO TIP: Choose lighter coloured scraps to create the background so that the image is easily seen.

Idea #5 – Let’s Frame It

My final design uses scrap pieces of cardstock to create a bright patterned frame. I started with a pieced background and then cut the frame, you could use the frame on it’s own or you can add the background patterned panel as I did. If you have nesting dies, think of the fun shapes you could create!

I took it one step further and decided to make it a shaker… which, is where I used today’s Bonus Idea (thank you Maaike she also has a YouTube channel HERE)!

BONUS IDEA – Shaker Bits

Use cardstock scraps to make the shaker bits! I have the perfect die for this, called Yay as it cuts a lot of confetti shapes in one pass, but you can also use small punches, dies, or even a hole punch to create your very own shaker elements. There are many die sets that cut out multiple circles/shapes, so don’t forget to check your stash.
And the best thing is, that if you use the same cardstock it will match your project perfectly!

I added a Casual Greetings sentiment to the centre of the shaker as well as some cute critters from the Ice Cream Stand Set.

  1. You have the perfect paper to showcase all these techniques, Therese. The dogs in the boat worked perfectly on the stripes and I love the stenciled flowers over the gray prints.

  2. Great cards and tips. Now I will have to remember some of these and put them into action. You know I haven’t touched a piece of cardstock or a stamp since before the new year! I hope I remember how!! I fear it will be like starting all over again or maybe there will be some muscle memory 😉
