Create a Vibrant Watercolor Background in Minutes! (+ Video)

Do you want a technique that is fast, easy and fun to do? Today I’m getting all ‘vibrant’ with watercolours 😉

When I think of watercolours I usually think of more muted and subtle tones. But, did you know that you can create vibrant watercolour projects? Liquid watercolours are just that, intense colour which can really pack a punch. I used the Altenew Watercolor Brush Marker Refills in today’s card project.

This is part of my Take 2 Series with Altenew and I’m so excited that you are joining me for another video today. Let’s begin.

I started by creating the watercolour background using smooshing, painting and splattering techniques. I did wait for the layers to dry between so they did not make ‘mud’ and also so that the splatters would show (adding splatters to wet paint would not work, they would just sink into the paper). When the panel was dry I made 2 quick and easy card designs… but, there is a BONUS card today as I had a leftover leaf!

Card #1 – For You

I die cut the panel using the Zero Waste Leaf Pattern die. Now, if you know me, I hate to waste, so I wanted to use the positive portion of the die cut to cover the front of the card.

Then I added a Mega Label Love sentiment, popped up with some foam tape.

And a black heart shaped enamel dot.

Card #2 – Happy Birthday

For the second card design I tried to go very clean and simple… but I kept adding stuff! I created a small leaf bouquet in the centre of the card.

And added a sentiment from the Birthday Greetings Stamp Set. Then I added some of the dots from the die cutting…

and some Metallic Thread, and enamel dot and some tiny Antique Gold Sequins. Doh! I knew I shoulda stopped earlier 🤣

BONUS IDEA: Don’t have liquid watercolours? You can certainly recreate this look using regular watercolours, or even use alcohol inks or reinkers!

Card #3 – BONUS IDEA

What to do with the ‘leftover’ leaves? I decided to add them into a floral stem. But, you could just as easily add them to a bouquet too.

I used a gorgeous layered rose created from the Garden Picks 3D die and added a golden frame (no longer available… insert sad face here). And the sentiment is from the Delicate Garden set.

Are you inspired to create a quick and easy vibrant watercolour background? To see just how I made these, watch it right here or in HD on YouTube.

  1. LOVE the color combination -and- the Zero Waste die is brilliant!
Why do you always make water coloring look so easy? I create MUD. I will try your “pro tip” of drying in between colors and not be so heavy handed. Thank you for the ideas! 🙂

  2. Just a great idea to create multiple cards. The zero waste die is inspired. I do like the bonus card. That gold frame is awesome.
