Unbelievable Crafting Hack: How to Hot Foil with Just a Regular Die + Video!

Would you like a ‘Quick Tip’ video sharing my new fave Hot Foil hack? That’s right, no sifting through hours of

LIVE footage, though that can be fun too lol. You may already know that you can Hot Foil regular cutting dies, but recently I’ve been playing with an easy ‘Magic trick’ that allows us to ‘widen’ the foiled lines. A huge thank you to Christine Stokes who was the one who enlightened me to this technique, you can see her video right HERE.

Technique Idea

Hot Foiling regular thin cutting dies works a treat, the result is a clean sharp foiled line on your cardstock. But what if you want a ‘thicker’ or a ‘wider’ foiled line? Adding a piece of acetate between the die and the foil will do just that and today’s focus is on sentiments!

TIPS:

The sandwich is: (from the base plate up) Metal die – cutting side up | Acetate | Hot Foil – pretty side to the die | cardstock to be foiled | use a shim or two if needed

I used heat-resistant acetate but you could try what you have (even try packaging), test a small area first if you are not sure.

Remember ‘pretty to pretty‘, the pretty (shiny) side of the foil should be facing the pretty side of the foiling plate.

And did you know that you can ‘clean’ the foil off your hot foiled plates using acetone? Just saying lol.

PRO TIP: Do not waste foils and cardstock! Test your sandwich first with a small piece of foil and the card you going to use, it’s worth it, just ask me how I know lol.

Idea #1 – Die Cut Sentiment

What a great way to extend our sentiment dies! Using a regular die foiled sandwich, would have meant the die cut letter was also exactly the same size. Being able to ‘widen’ the foiled line with the acetate means that it now has a fun shiny border visible around each letter in the sentiment.

You can try any sentiment dies that you have, today I chose to use the Tall Happy Birthday combined with the Fairy Dust Hot Foil from Crafty Critta.

Idea #2 – Stamped Sentiment

A coordinating sentiment and die is perfect for this technique. I simply Hot Foiled the Turquoise foil onto the cardstock first and then lined up the stamps to ‘fill’ the sentiment. Having the ‘wider’ foiled line really adds impact to this design.

I used the Hey You Set along with a subsentiment from the HB2U stamp set.

PRO TIP: Did you know that you can use many different types of cardstock with Hot Foil? I decided to try some coloured ‘Sprout’ cardstock today and love the result. I would recommend a test run of your sandwich first to make sure you have it right before commiting.

  1. It really is magic and you are becoming quite the hot foil enabler too. Lol. I love these ideas for sentiments.

  2. Thanks so much for the mention Therese, your lovely cards make me want to do some more foiling… which I haven’t done for quite some time!

    1. I was the same Christine, it had been a hot minute (pardon the pun) and now all I’ve been doing is foiling again lol. Thanks again for your inspiration!
