Why does card design feel so hard 😉? I totally get it, you just had to have that stamp set but now don’t know HOW to use it, I have an easy answer for you!
When in doubt, use a simple sketch! This is a fantastic way to ‘learn’ a new stamp or die set without the stress of making something too complex… and it gives you somewhere EASY to start. Speaking of which, I have created a FREEBIE sharing a few of my all time fave go-to fave Clean & Simple sketches (scroll down to grab it)!

I used to shy away from sketches and would always head to the colour challenges when began card making. It wasn’t until I joined a ‘sketch challenge’ that I turned to the dark side and could see just how versatile and empowering they are. Put it simply, you can make a sketch as simple or as complicated as you like, the basic design may be the same but the result can look totally different.
For example, my 2 cards today were based upon the same sketch but they look different, even though I used similar supplies… imagine if I had of used a different die/stamp set, then it would have changed the look all together, powerful right!
Card #1 – Clean & Simple
You may notice that the sketch has a large focal point with the sentiment in the centre. I decided to use a ‘large sentiment‘ in the centre and surround it with a couple of cute critters.

BONUS IDEA: Instead of using critters some sweet flowers would look great scattered around a large sentment.

Card #2 – Not so Clean & Simple 😉!
Can you see that I have a ‘hint’ of the circle from the sketch? I double die cut a piece of green cardstock with a circle die to give the illusion of a circle, but it also gave me a way to ‘ground’ the images.
PRO TIP: You don’t actually need to have a circle in the background, you can simply visualise this as the section of the card where you are going to attach your elements. It could even be a bouquet of flowers, but if you want it more ‘true’ to the sketch adding a circle beneath or a frame would make for a gorgeous design too!

Creating a more ‘busy’ design can be fun. Backgrounds can be anything you want, stamped, die cut, embossed or even foiled. Choose whatever suits the images or elements that you are using for your focal point.
And it’s easy to add either a die cut or stamped sentiment. I had a bit of fun on this card, I made it look like the bear is holding the sentiment.

You’re a master! and I do love a sketch as a jumping-off-point, Therese! These are both so very cute!

Adorable designs!!!
I do love using a sketch and or color challenge to jump start my creativity. Helps to know 1-2 things out of the way and I can quickly get to creating. Helps me to be more productive too instead of sitting and stewing for minutes to an hour trying to decide where to start. Thanks for a great illustration of how to use a sketch simply or to step it up to something a bit more complex.
This is a double dose of cuteness, Therese!
Thank you so much!
A simple sketch is a great jumping off point for a card. Loved the two cards today. So very sweet.
So glad you liked these Lisa x
You do THE BEST “clean and simple” cards. My C&S always look boring and incomplete with too much white space. I like your idea of a big sentiment in the middle– I will give it a go.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your birch tree background paper– where did you get that? I “have” to have it in my stash! It is perfect for woodland critters.
Thank you for the inspiration!
So glad you like there June! The paper is an old Honey Bee paper pack and I found it still available here https://www.scrapbook.com/store/hbs-hbpa-016.html Hope this helps, Thanks Therese
Great cards. Therese! I love cards with animals – these are just so CuTE!!
I agree, they are totally too cute!
WOW ! Staggering designs, they look like really classy and stylish posh boutique range, but even better of course, you’re created them. Love it xx
Thank you my friend x
