#ALCOHOLMARKERS

You may already know that I LOVE to colour… but, I also know that it can feel intimidating. And these new colours in the Cottage Garden Set are divine!! Today I share 2 ideas to create some beautiful cards, colouring with alcohol markers, but it’s easy because ALL the hard work is done before you start 🤔.

Idea #1 – 3D Embossing Folders

Have you ever thought about adding simple colouring to a 3D image created with and embossing folder? The impression is already there ready for you to use. I usually start with a lighter colour marker and then use a darker shade for the centre of the petals to add depth.

No guess work, and it doesn’t have to be perfectly blended and coloured. In fact, a sketchy look almost gives it that ‘watercolour’ finish.

BONUS IDEA: You can also use the markers to add extra details, like I did in the centre of these flowers.

Idea #2 – Die Cut Images

Another quick way to add colouring with alcohol markers is to colour directly onto a die cut image like these butterflies. After die cutting in white 80lb cardstock, I started colouring with my lightest marker first. Then I came in with some shading and blended different colours for variation.

The great thing about markers is that they are very forgiving. Don’t forget that a lighter marker will ‘remove’ colour, or you could use a Colorless Blender to fix any errors.

PRO TIP: You could also reverse the process and colour a piece of cardstock first, then die cut the image, each way will give you a unique and beautiful result.

  1. Beautiful cards. I have not colored my embossing folder images directly, but I see how beautiful they can be! Yours are perfect, and I love those colors!

  2. Both cards are beautiful! I love coloring on 3D embossing folders but definitely need a stencil to help me achieve that! I love when Altenew comes out with a new folder with stencils to color!

  3. How on earth was I the first “like”? Well, I am honored to have been! Your cards are stunning. Those butterflies are breathtaking!

  4. Gorgeous cards! Love them both, but that colored embossed one….YOWZA! I was going to look for that stamp and die set lol So pretty!

  5. so beautifully done on all your gorgeous cards Therese. Looks like I’ll be buying myself some new goodies for Christmas!

  6. Great tips, as always, Therese! Your cards are beautiful! I haven’t tried my markers on an embossed panel, but plan to try it. I did enjoy coloring a die cut as it just wasn’t as intimidating, for some reason, as it is to color stamped images. Coloring is SO not my skill!

    1. These are great ways to use markers if you don’t feel like colouring is your strong suit. The basic elements are there, it’s just putting marker to paper really! So glad you enjoyed it Greta!

  7. Here’s the deal with butterflies 🦋, so beautiful but some are bothered by the juicy middle body 😂 My mom and friend recently shared how they don’t like them. I need the image to show more wing and less middle AND not look like an outdated “old lady card”. Ha ha! Thanks for sharing your beautiful creations! ❤️
