#FLORALCHRISTMAS

When I think of Floral Christmas cards, the first flower that comes to mind is the Poinsettia (even though it’s actually coloured leaves and not technically a flower 😉). And I love them and… ahem, have MANY Poinsettia stamps and dies, check out this Christmas VIDEO HERE!

But… what if you don’t have any ‘Christmas flowers’? Today, I thought I would explore using regular stamps, dies and stencils to see if there are florals that you may be able to use from your stash to recreate that Floral Christmas Card look! Ler’s see how we go!

Idea #1 – One Layer Stencil

For a fast beautiful floral bouquet, you cannot go past a layering stencil. And, it also has the added bonus of being a ‘one layer-ish’ card design (I usually work on a separate A2 panel and attach it to a card front), so postage is not an issue here.

Floral bouquets on Christmas cards always reminds me of those ‘antique’ style cards, with any style of bouqet in the centre. You could amp this up, by cutting it out and popping it up… wouldn’t it look beautiful on a dark blue-grey background? Or even with a splatter of ‘white’ to create a snow effect!

Idea #2 – Tone on Tone

When in doubt… return to Tone on Tone. This technique is a great way to create a quick and easy background, and many flowers or bouquets could be used to do this. To keep the card simple why not just add a large sentiment in the centre, or you could do what I did…

and make it a present! If you are a ‘ribbon’ fan then you could use real ribbon, but I took the easy road and made my ribbon and bow from paper. I also decorated it up a little with a sprig of flower which co-ordinates with the stamped background image.

Idea #3 – Die Cut Smoosh

For a totally different look, I decided to create a watercoloured ‘smooshed’ background. This time I used die cut flowers and leaves and focused my images from the top of the card design. But, this would look just as beautiful with a central bouquet design.

PRO TIP: These flowers were made using only part of another die cut flower, don’t feel limited to using ALL of the die layers, stretch them out to create new and fun looks!

Idea #4 – Die Cut Wreath

Maybe my favourite card today (but sssh… don’t tell the others), but you could literally create a wreath out of any flowers and leaves that you have in your stash. I think wreaths are often associated with holidays and using non-Christmas style flowers doesn’t seem to make it any less ‘holiday’ to me.

BONUS IDEA: Don’t have many floral dies? You could mix it up and used stamped images to create the wreath instead.

Idea #5 – Frame It

And this is always a fave for me when creating with flowers. I love to create a ‘frame’ around the edge of the card and these big blooms were perfect. I used a bouquet for this card, but you can get a similar look by layering up single flowers and leaves.

And if you want to make it ‘post friendly’ you can skip the extra dimension I always add 😊.

  1. The cards are cute, but I don’t get a Christmas vibe from them. They would make really nice birthday, anniversary or sympathy cards… but they look too spring/summer to me.

    1. Yes, I know they are not for everyone but we are in Spring and Summer here in Australia. I think they would be great to give to someone as a holiday card who is not in ‘winter’ right now lol. Thank you for your lovely feedback. Crafty hugs Therese

      1. ahhhh… well, that makes sense! never thought of that! yeah, guess that would make sense! 🙂

  2. These totally work. You have chosen colours and leaf shapes that look like native Australian plants which are out at Christmas.

  3. These are ALL gorgeous, Therese but that sweet wreath just makes my heart happy! Wreaths were always a favorite to create in my floral design days

  4. Oh Therese
These are spectacular! Mind you, you had me with poinsettia.
Such a wonder quintet of cards. Loved them all so much. The protea card has such an Australian vibe to it.
    Wonderful video too.
I’ve spent today, Sunday, wrapping my Christmas presents and watching the video again.
    You’ve made my day!
    Merry hugs

  5. Therese, I agree with you that any floral can be used at Christmas – especially when Christmas is in Spring/Summer as it is in your neighborhood!
ALL gorgeous – but I do have a favorite today: that big red bow!

  6. I do like all of them but if I had to pick a favourite, I guess it would be “frame-it”. Great video and thank you for sharing your time! 🙂

  7. I haven’t used my Hanging Garden die from Altenew for quite some time and I was blown away by the way you used it for a Christmas card. Thanks for the inspiration, Therese. You always have such wonderful ideas on ways to use stamps and dies.

  8. I’m so happy to see non traditional colours and flowers on your holiday cards it’s such a refreshing change and I’m all for it. These four are spectacular especially love your use of colour. All of them are swoon worthy and I feel a little shopping spree coming on as all of the items you used can be used in a mulititude of ways and all year long.

    Marie
