5 Minute Card Making Tips!
- Pre plan the cards, having a basic idea will speed up the process.
- Pick a theme, technique or idea to flow through your cards.
- Make multiple cards at once, why? Your supplies are out and ready to go.
- Decide on a colour palette before starting, using the same colours throughout will save time.
- Keep premade card bases and panels on hand.
- Even better, keep premade sentiments ready to go.
- Assemble all the supplies you need.
- Batch it out
- Avoid layers, this takes time to do and can add to postage costs
- Use ‘big’ images, elements or sentiments, these can fill a card real quick
- And, it’s fun to challenge yourself to see what can be made in such a short time !
Ps. No-one is really keeping a stopwatch so don’t stress or rush if you don’t enjoy it.
#FOILING
In today’s episode, we’re diving into foiling, the easiest way to add a touch of shine and elegance to any project. Whether you’re using Toner or Hot Foil, you can get dazzling results in just minutes!
PRO TIP: One of my BIGGEST tips when it’s comes to speeding up foiling is to use those few minutes while the press plates are heating to your adavantage. I used this time to do the die cutting, glueing of layers and I also gathered my card bases. Scroll down to see the other ways that I ‘saved time’ making these cards!
Idea #1 – Background
Did you know that BetterPress plates work beautifully with Hot Foil? These fine lines in the petals, would have been difficult to stamp over such a large surface, and my black ink is black… but it’s not as vivid as this amazing foil.

Speed it Up?
- No colouring
- I die-cut the panel using an A2 die
- No dimension for the panel
- Batched out the sentiments (with many to spare)

Idea #2 – Reverse Image
My favourite tip today! Did you know that you can use ‘left-over’ Hot Foil on sheets of Toner Art? I used a multi coloured panel, but these also come in solid white, black (which was all we could get for a long time) and solid basic colours too.

Speed it Up?
- Using a pre prepared multicoloured panel looks like it took an age to colour, but it was ready to go!
- NOT using a ‘Solid Hot-Foil Plate’ always saves me time and frustration, I would always struggle to get the perfect result using these for left-over foil. It could be quite hit and miss 😲.
- Again, I die-cut the panel for the card front.
- Only added dimension to the sentiment (because I couldn’t help myself).

Idea #3 – Partial Die-Cutting
This single bloom is stunning, but I wanted to include some colour in the design. Hence, the idea to add a quick partial die cut panel. This is very easy to do and the result always has that WoW factor!

Speed it Up?
- I batched out the Hot Foiling all together (Yes, this flower is also a BetterPress plate)
- While I was waiting for the plates to heat up the foil (usually about 2 minutes), I used this time to die cut and layer the sentiments.
- Instead of measuring the panels perfectly, I adhered them to the card front, then flipped the panel over and cut off any overhang with a long pair of scissors.
- Again, the only dimension was the sentiment… although, I was desperate to pop up the flower panel!

CHANGE IT UP! I used foil for today’s cards, but any of these designs could easily be adapted and made, using stamps, background stamps, stencils or even cover dies.

Although I’ve given up getting my foiling machine to work, I love your ideas and am sure your tips and tricks will help others, Therese! I do love your designs and know I will be inspired just the same!
=]
Even with the BetterPress plates? I find these are easy to use, but I do use up to 3 shims and if it’s a big plate I will heat the plate up on the platform and I ‘cook’ it for at least 2 minutes… sometimes longer if I am doing something else. I don’t feel like they can be ‘overcooked’ lol.
I still love foiling and these plates are tempting. Have you tried using watercolour on the images after foiling? Pencil should work too.
Can’t say that I have ever tried watercolour… sounds intriguing!
Beautiful cards Therese! So much of a contrast between the colours! Thank you for sharing your inspiration! 🥰
