Critter Card Tips:

Using critters on cards doesn’t have to be limited to kids’ birthdays or Easter. With a bit of creativity, you can bring these cute creatures into unexpected themes like housewarmings or weddings! Here are a few tips for making critters shine in surprising ways:

  • Think Outside the Box with Color – Critters can work for any occasion with the right color palette. For a wedding card, try using soft pastels or even metallics to match the elegance of the event. For a new home card, consider earthy tones or even vibrant colors to create a fun, welcoming vibe.
  • Add Personality with Accessories – Don’t just stop at the critter itself. Add little accessories to match the theme. A housewarming card with a critter holding a tiny house key or a wedding card with a critter in a suit can add a charming touch that’s sure to make the recipient smile.
  • Use Backgrounds to Set the Scene – Critters become even more special when placed in the right setting. For a wedding card, a soft floral background can enhance the elegance of the critter, while a cozy home setting can make the critter feel like part of the family in a housewarming card.
  • Layer for Depth – Adding dimension to your card can make a critter-themed design feel more sophisticated. Use foam tape to pop up your critters or build a multi-layered background that gives the design depth and interest.

By thinking outside the typical card themes and using a bit of imagination, critters can fit perfectly into almost any occasion. Now let’s take a look at the cards I’ve created today to show you just how these tips come to life!

Bring out the Critters…

Idea #1 – New Pad?

This little frog looks very happy in his ‘new pad’, and using a play on words is a great place to start. Some stamp and die sets will guide you, with a fun and punny sentiment to inspire you to stretch your supplies in a certain way.

PRO TIP: You can always create your own sentiment, either from another set, use lettering stamps/dies or even print one out on a computer.

And, remember that you can always change things up to use unexpected colours. I think this works particularly well on critter cards because they look ‘cartoon-like’ anyway. So why not make the frogs teal blue-green… and who wouldn’t love a bright pink new pad?

Idea #2 – Tie the Knot!

The ‘frog prince‘ idea got me thinking that this cute critter could be made into a Wedding Card. There are many ways to dress up critters, use a ‘bow tie’, draw on a suit, add a tiara, even some tulle.

Don’t forget to check out the rock on her finger (it’s HUGE)!

There are so many ways to change up an image, I’m still going on here… add eye lashes, hair, pink cheeks, sunglasses, party hats or even Santa hats (which is another fave of mine).

TOP TIP: When you are die cutting (or colouring) 2 of the same images to create a couple, using different colours will make them look ‘different’ even though they are exactly the same.

Who knew critters could be so versatile? With just a little creativity, these adorable little creatures can add personality and charm to any card, no matter the occasion. I hope these tips inspire you to try something new and unexpected in your own cardmaking. Happy crafting, and don’t forget to share your critter creations with me!
