Struggling with masculine card designs? You’re not alone!
Many crafters find it challenging to create cards that feel personal and meaningful for men, but it doesn’t have to be complicated. With the right approach, Cards 4 Men can be just as fun and creative as any other design.
Today, I’m going to show you how to create an 80th birthday card with a handyman twist—using a larger 5×7 card base and some easy-to-apply techniques that will make your projects stand out!
I use affiliate links, this means that if you click on a product that is linked to an affiliate shop then I will receive a small portion of the sale at no extra cost to you).

But first, a quick reminder, have you signed up for the Stress Free Cardmaking Summit yet? TIP #1 Larger Card Base (5×7 size, as requested!)
- Why Bigger is Better: A 5×7 card gives you more room to showcase your design elements. It’s perfect for larger embellishments, like tool images or detailed backgrounds, and allows for a more balanced layout.
- Design Pro Tip: When working with a larger base, keep your design elements focused and organized. Too much space can feel overwhelming, so consider dividing the card into sections or using a strong focal point.
You can see that I created a central image with the sentiment balanced both above and below. It’s almost like the card is separated into 3 main sections. Having a larger area to create on gives the opportunity to add MORE, words, elements and more fun!

TIP #2 Masculine Cards
- Go for Strong, Bold Designs: Masculine cards often work well with simple, bold designs. Stick to a few strong design elements and avoid overly fussy details. Think clean lines, rustic textures, and a solid color palette with deeper tones like navy, brown, or forest green.
- Use Texture and Pattern: Embossed backgrounds, woodgrain stamps, and metal accents can add a rugged, masculine feel to your card. Consider using real tools, like nails or screws, as embellishments for an extra touch of authenticity.
I shopped my stash for masculine images that I could use for a woodworker. Stamp and die sets can be mixed and matched to get an array of images to suit your project. The woodgrain cardstock is perfect for this theme and, using a combination of ‘woods’ separates the background from the die cut sentiment. I also love the added texture of the pegboard and cork number 80.

TIP #3. Personalizing Masculine Cards
- Incorporate Hobbies or Interests: Personalizing a card for a specific person can make it even more special. Since this card is for a handyman or woodworker, using tools or workshop elements in the design is a great way to reflect their passion.
- Sentiment Ideas: Adding fun, relevant sentiments like “nailed it” or “you’re a true craftsman” adds a personal touch. Tailor the message to the recipient’s personality or favorite hobbies for an extra layer of meaning.
Obviously this card was made for a woodworker. It’s always nice to personalise a card for someone special, it also a great place to get ideas for the design. Focus on a hobby, maybe their favourite colours or the colours of their sports team. And, who doesn’t love a pun!
