Eclipse Technique Christmas Card | My CASE from Anna’s Design! + Video

There’s more to this card than meets the eye….

Look closely, and you’ll find a hidden frame disguised within the design – ssshh, it’s a secret! 😉

Today I’m hopping along with the CASE Me a Christmas Card video hop, curated by the beautiful and talented Michelle Lupton (another Aussie!), and we’d love you to join us!

This year, my card was inspired by Anna’s beautiful bird design (scroll down to see it). I decided to recreate it with a fun technique twist – the Eclipse Technique! It’s one of those designs that makes people lean in for a closer look (and maybe wonder how you did it).

Would you like to see what I’m talking about?
Here’s my card!

The Eclipse Technique is a fun way to create a hidden design that flows seamlessly through your die-cut shape.

How?
You stamp and colour your design, then cut a shape right out of that same panel – here it’s the frame. When you pop it back in place with a touch of dimension, the image still flows across it like nothing ever happened. Look from the side and you’ll spot the secret – that raised edge gives the whole card a hidden layer of depth! You can watch how to do this technique in the video linked above… spoiler alert, it’s easy!

Don’t forget we are video hopping along! But first… are you ready to see more?

What Does CASE Mean?

CASE stands for Copy And Share Everything! (There are a few versions floating around, but that’s the one I like best.) It’s all about taking inspiration from another cardmaker and making it your own.

For this hop, I was inspired by Anna’s gorgeous card – a sweet bird perched on a die-cut frame surrounded by flowers and foliage.

How I Changed It Up!

  • I made mine a Christmas card (Anna’s was a “Wishing You” card).
  • We both used a bird, but I added the Eclipse Technique to my design.
  • Anna’s card featured pretty pastels and watercolours, while I went for Christmas reds and sage greens using ink blending and pencils.
  • We both included flowers, branches, and berries, though I couldn’t resist adding a gold bow (because, Christmas 🎄).
  • The layout is similar – a central frame on an A2 portrait card – but I shifted the sentiment placement.
  • Anna’s sentiment sat beneath the frame, while mine was a white heat-embossed on a circle of black cardstock, tucked neatly into the top right corner for balance.

Let’s take a closer look!
Here you can really see how the Eclipse Technique creates that hidden depth…

the image flows right through the frame, but from the side you can spot the raised detail that makes it special.

I love how this technique adds that little something extra to a clean design – it’s subtle, but the hidden dimension is such a fun surprise. Have you tried the Eclipse Technique before? It’s one of those designs that looks tricky but is actually super simple once you give it a go! The raised edge adds a soft shadow and that clever “how’d she do that?” moment!

Now it’s time for YOU to get crafty!
I hope this has inspired you to give the Eclipse Technique a try – and maybe even CASE a card yourself! Don’t forget to tag me if you do, I’d love to see what you create. You can watch the video and join the hop at the same time – see you there!

Happy Papercrafting,

Special thanks to my crafty assistant, Chad (aka ChatGPT), for helping me stay on track with my Gemini brain, grammar, and spelling… well, all the things! 😄
