Embossing Folders Over Stamped Images
Embossing folders aren’t just for backgrounds – they can also be used over stamped images to add texture and dimension in a completely different way. By stamping first and embossing afterwards, the texture becomes part of the image rather than sitting behind it.
Embossing Folders Over Stamped Images – Helpful Tips
- Stamp and color first, emboss second: Make sure your stamped image is completely dry before embossing so it doesn’t smudge.
- Choose simple images: Bold shapes or line art stamps tend to emboss more cleanly than very detailed designs. Softer colors often highlight the embossed detail more clearly.
- Emboss or deboss: Embossing creates a raised, more dramatic look, while debossing keeps the texture softer and more subtle.
- Test pressure if needed: Too much pressure can distort fine stamped details or crack cardstock, so a quick test run using a scrap of the same cardstock can be helpful.
- Expect a little movement: Embossing over stamping can slightly change the look of the image – that’s part of the charm.
Card Inspiration – Embossing Folders Over Stamped Images
For this card, I used an embossing folder over a stamped image to add texture and dimension in a bold way. This elegant bloom bouquet was colored in a light, washy style with alcohol markers, leaving plenty of white space around the image so the embossing could really stand out.

I decided to go hard or go home 😂 and deboss a very busy floral embossing folder over the entire panel. The contrast between the soft coloring and the detailed texture adds a lot of interest. If you prefer a more subtle look, a graphic or less detailed embossing folder is a safer option and still gives beautiful results.

PRO TIP: Pop up your sentiments. Embossing over fine or delicate fonts can distort the letters, so lifting the sentiment with foam adhesive keeps it readable.
Now it’s over to you!
Try using embossing folders over stamped images and don’t forget to share your creations with me on social media – I’d love to see what you make.
More embossing folder inspiration is on the way, so stay tuned.
