Reverse 3D Stencil Technique | Tropical Card with an Embossing Folder Twist (+ LIVE Video)

Are you ready to flip your stencil technique on its head?

This card is part of my Same But Different Embossing Folder Series, where I’m sharing creative ways to get more from the folders and stencils already in your stash.

Instead of creating raised texture, today I’m flipping the process to create a pressed, debossed stencil impression – and we’re taking it tropical 🌴

Reverse 3D Stencil Technique

This reverse 3D stencil technique works beautifully with coordinating embossing folder and stencil sets. Because the stencil layers are designed to align with the folder design, flipping them over creates a pressed, debossed impression that still matches the original image perfectly.

HOW TO CREATE A REVERSE 3D STENCIL TECHNIQUE

  • Ink blend the stencil layers in order – but flip them over before applying ink.
  • Choose lighter inks so the shadows from the debossing are easier to see.
  • TIP: Make a practice panel first to check alignment (or some sets are possible tuck the stencil into a corner to keep positioning consistent).
  • Align the panel inside the coordinating embossing folder (don’t forget to flip it!) and secure with low-tack tape so it doesn’t shift.
  • Run it through your die-cut machine using your usual 3D embossing sandwich.
  • Stand back and admire the debossed magic 🥰

Card Inspiration – A Closer Look

For this tropical design, I chose a soft “Hibiscus” palette – blush pink, gentle coral, and some blue greens. I kept the tones light so the debossed details stand out, as the shadows naturally define the pressed design.

I especially love how well this reverse 3D stencil technique works with coordinating stencil and embossing folder sets. Because the designs are made to align, flipping the stencil still gives you a perfectly matched impression – just remember to flip the 3D folder too.

  1. Such a fun technique and your card is really so retro chic with this ‘Marimekko-esque’ stencil!
