Butterfly Die Cut Card Ideas: From Detailed to Done in Minutes!(+ Video Tutorial)

Do you ever overthink a design?
I may have overthought this first card just a little… but the second one? So quick!

Today I’m using the same die for two completely different looks. The first one has all the layers and detail… and the second one is clean, simple, and came together so fast. It’s kind of wild how different they turn out.

Let’s take a look at today’s cards.

Butterfly Die Cut Card Ideas

This butterfly die is one of those designs that does the hard work for you. In a single pass through the die cutting machine, you get a whole kaleidoscope of butterflies ready to go. I ran it through a few times in different colours (and even some vellum), and now I have enough butterflies to make a whole stack of cards! These are the first two I created.

Card #1 – A Kaleidoscope of Butterflies

I added some white ink splatter to the die cut butterflies, then layered them in a mix of colours, vellum and a little glitter for shine. To help them really stand out, I created a dark, patterned background behind them.

Then came the layout… and this part took a while! There were just so many options. In the end, I decided to have the butterflies flowing across the card, all moving in the same direction.

I started by placing the larger butterflies first, then built the smaller ones around them, finishing with the tiny fillers. And to add some dimension, I popped up the wings of the larger butterflies with foam tape. I finished the card with a simple sentiment tucked into the lower right among the butterflies.

PRO TIP: Work from large to small when arranging lots of elements – it makes the whole design much easier to balance.

Card #2 – From Kaleidoscope to Clean & Simple

For this card, I went in a completely different direction and kept things clean and simple. I stamped a soft silhouette floral branch in the centre using the same pastel tones, then added a single butterfly popped up for a little dimension.

This one came together so quickly – no overthinking required! It really shows how just one butterfly can be enough to create a beautiful focal point.

I finished it off with a simple dark blue stamped sentiment in the lower right to balance the design.

What to do with those leftover die cut butterflies?

Honestly, this is the fun part! Once you’ve got a little stash built up, you can mix and match colours, layer them up, or keep it super simple with just one as a focal point.

They’re perfect for those days when you want to make a card quickly without starting from scratch.

Happy papercrafting,
