Color isn’t just decoration… it’s what brings the drama to a design.
Today I’m sharing a floral card created for the Altenew May 2026 release, and if you’re looking for cardmaking color ideas, this one really shows how color can impact the overall design.

So, where did I start today?
It was all about the color. I chose a palette that felt bold but balanced, and I used it to add interest behind the main floral die cut. It’s amazing how a simple layer of color can completely change the look of a design.
Here is the color palette I used.
Card Inspiration – Flourished Flora
This is a large bouquet, and adding a combination of coordinating colors to the different varieties of flowers really packs some punch. If you’re looking for cardmaking color ideas, using a mix of tones within the same palette is an easy way to create impact without overwhelming the design. To tie it all together, I used the same color for all the leaves – but instead of a traditional green, I chose a coastal blue-green which gives it a more unique look.
Initially, I thought about popping the bouquet up on a white A2 card base… but I couldn’t help wondering if adding just one more color would make a difference. I tried a few options behind the die cut – pale turquoise, eggshell, even a deep red – and honestly, a lot of them worked. But in the end, Misty Moor was the winner. That golden green tone added just the right amount of contrast and really helped the image pop.
Stamp your image using a very pale ink before you start stenciling. This gives you a guide for where to add each layer of color. Once the ink blending is complete, the stamped lines disappear under the dye ink – leaving you with a softer, no-line finish while still keeping everything perfectly aligned for die cutting.
