I started with one carefully planned Christmas card color palette…
But apparently the cats had other ideas. One climbing the tree, one toppled a tree and a few leftover pieces later, I somehow had three Christmas cat cards!

Christmas Card Color Palette
These cards began as part of the planning process for a lesson in my new Color Made Easy for Cardmakers class. The first design follows the color palette I chose for the lesson, while the other two grew from the leftover pieces – and a little help from the cats.
I’ll share more about the class below, but first, let’s take a closer look at the cards.
Card #1 – Main Color: Pink
This is the card that started it all. I used a soft pastel Christmas card color palette, with pink as the main color, a white tree and smaller touches of blue and yellow throughout the decorations.

The grey cats worked perfectly as a neutral, helping the pastel colors stand out without making the design feel too busy. And of course, one mischievous cat had to climb the tree – because apparently Christmas trees are just very sparkly cat towers.

PRO TIP: When you are die cutting, why not cut multiples and a few extras? It gives you more flexibility to build on the design as you create without having to stop and do more die cutting. Plus, you may have enough leftover pieces to make another card – or even a coordinating set to give as a gift!

Card #2 – Main Color: Blue
For this card, I shifted the focus to blue, using a pale blue snowflake background with a pastel blue Christmas tree as the main feature.

The grey cat and white details keep the palette balanced, while the softer pastel accents help it coordinate with the first card. I love how changing the main color gives the design a different feel, even though many of the same die-cut pieces are being used.

Initially I had this cat hanging out of the tree, but I felt sorry for him so gave him a place to stand – on top of a present with its head poking through the tree branches.

Card #3 – Main Color: Grey
Okay, so… I know grey is technically a neutral rather than a color – don’t tell grey that – but for this final card, it became the main color, or more accurately, the dominant neutral.

Changing the ratios of colors and neutrals within the same palette can make one Christmas card color palette go a very long way. And guess what… I haven’t even made one with yellow as the main color yet! 😂

Oh, and did you notice this poor tangled cat is interactive? You can see exactly what it does in the video.

One Palette, Three Cards
It’s amazing how far one Christmas card color palette can go – especially when you change the main color, adjust the ratios and let the cats take over.
Which card is your favorite: pink, blue or grey?
I hope these playful Christmas cat cards have inspired you to look at your own color palettes a little differently – and perhaps cut a few extra pieces while you’re at it!
