From flat to fabulous? Today we’re adding texture three different ways!
We recently explored how texture can add that something extra to a simple card in my Simple Cards with Something Extra mini series. Today, we’re taking that idea a little further with three different ways to add texture to your Christmas card backgrounds.
But first, would you like to see the cards I made?

Christmas Card Texture Ideas!
Texture is one of those little details that can make a BIG difference on a card – and there’s definitely more than one way to add it! I’ve mixed things up today with dimension, pattern and shine, so let’s take a closer look at each of the cards.
The Altenew Heirloom Filigree coordinating products I’m using today aren’t actually Christmas designs at all, but that’s part of the fun! With the right colors, a little shine and some festive finishing touches, they’re very easy to dress up for Christmas.
It’s a great reminder to look beyond your Christmas supplies and see what else might work
💡 Don’t forget to ‘shop your stash’ for a fresh new take on these ideas!
Card #1 – Let the Embossing Do the Work
For my first card, I kept the background simple and let that beautiful 3D embossing do all the work!

I added the die cut ‘believe’ sentiment across the front, then hung a couple of layered bells from it for a fun little Christmas touch (thank you Michele 🥰). I love how the simple focal point lets all that texture stay visible – sometimes you really don’t need to add much more!
BONUS IDEA: Have the coordinating stencils? Wouldn’t it be fun to add some quick color to the raised filigree pattern!

Card #3 – Add Texture With Hot Foil
Next it was time to add some shine! I used the coordinating Press Plate with red hot foil on a pink background, and I love how those little diamond details catch the light.
This texture is much more subtle, but you still get that beautiful pressed impression in the cardstock – with the bonus of a little Christmas shine! It’s a fun way to add interest without adding any extra bulk to the card.

And yes, a little cover up was necessary, I simply added some poinsettia flowers and sentiment and a couple of touch ups with a red gel glitter pen.

Card #3 – Add a Little Texture Past
And finally, I brought out the coordinating stencils and used some pale pink and red to create the background. But we’re talking texture today, so of course I couldn’t stop there!
A little iridescent texture paste through the stencil adds dimension without covering up all that gorgeous color and pattern underneath. And the best thing about a layering stencil set is that I can pick and choose which section get’s the texture.

Pssst did you see? I made some of my very own coordinating red metallic cardstock using the same hot foil from the background panel. It was perfect for the sentiment on this design.

What would I have done differently?
- These 3D embossing folders have serious depth and this panel did have some cracking inbetween the embossed pattern, next time I would remove the extra shim in my die cutting machine.
- Hot foil can be a little frustrating and this is even more so on colored cardstock. And in retrospect an ink blended pink panel may have been easier for a crisp result.
Over to You!
So, which texture would you choose – embossing, texture paste or hot foil? And remember, you don’t need the exact products I’ve used today. Have a look through your stash and see what backgrounds, stencils and embossing folders you already have that could be given a Christmas makeover!
And if you’d like even more ideas for adding that little something extra to your cards, be sure to check out my Simple Cards with Something Extra mini series here.
Thanks so much for stopping by. I hope this inspires you to add a little texture to your next card!
