#FOCALPOINT

When it comes to design, emphasizing a specific portion of your layout is a great way to highlight a key element and guide the viewer’s eye to what matters most on your focal point card.

Card #1 – Central Focal Point

One of the easiest ways to create a focal point on an embossed background is to gather all your elements together in a central design.

I love the look of a centered layout, but this technique can also work in other areas of a card. For example, imagine placing this honey jar in the lower-left corner – typically, I’d move the sentiment slightly lower so it overlaps the right edge of the focal point, and raise the lower bee above the sentiment.

Don’t be afraid to switch things around when creating a central design – balance matters, and these small adjustments keep everything cohesive while drawing attention to the main element.

BONUS IDEA: Don’t want an embossed background? Swap it out for some sweet design paper instead!

Card #2 – Partial Coloring

For this card, I kept a 3D embossed background, but this time it’s a floral design. I created the focal point by using the coordinating stencils to color just one flower, letting it stand out against the textured background. I also added a little bee just bee-cause

BONUS IDEA: Don’t have the coordinating stencils? No problem! You can achieve the same effect by coloring the flower with markers, pencils, or even watercolors. The key is to make a single element the star of your focal point card, while keeping the rest of the design subtle and balanced.

Card #3 – Recessed Circular Window

For this design, I switched things up a bit. I started with a floral background created using a set of layering stencils, then chose a section that would make a sweet focal point and created a recessed circular die-cut window.

The window is part of the design panel, so the pattern flows seamlessly, with a little bee and a sentiment inside to draw the eye.

To step it up even more, I added a small floral wax seal for a fun, dimensional touch. This technique is perfect for creating a focal point card with depth and interest, while keeping the overall design balanced

I hope these 3 ideas inspire you to create your own focal point card! Try a central design, partial coloring, or a recessed window, and see how a well-placed focal point brings your card to life. Share your creations in the comments or tag me on social media – I’d love to see them!

  2. I always learn something new when I visit your blog, Therese! Thanks for all the design tips! Your cards are beautiful!

  3. Love all three of these! You always create such awesome cards! My favorite is the Dancing Cosmos card where you just colored one flower and added the bee! I will be getting my embossing folder tomorrow and I can’t wait to case this card with different colors and probably adding some small bird die cuts!!

  4. The Honeycomb Haven bundle has so many possibilities for card making. Just love the embossing folder included. The Dancing Cosmos folder and stencil is so pretty-especially the way you high lighted one flower and the rest of the embossed image was left in white. Stunning cards.

  5. All three cards are beautiful! The third one is my favorite, with the lovely embossed floral design and the bees! Gorgeous!

  6. All of these cards are stunning, Therese. Your color sense is fabulous! I really enjoyed seeing how you used the new Moonlit Twilight and other inks. I envy the people on your snailmail mailing list! 😀
