#DIECUTWORDS
With the introduction of die cut words, our technique repertoire needed to expand as well as our stash. And, with so many different styles to choose from it would be easy to become overwhelmed. Today, I am going to help you with that problem as I walk you through how to create with multiple styles of word dies as well as share multiple techniques to use them too.
Tip #1 – On Repeat
An oldie but a goodie. I love to create ‘repeat’ designs on cards with stamps, so why not do the same with die cut words.
Simply die cut multiples the same word and adhere them in a repeat pattern onto a card front. This design is easy to do and can be stepped up. Apply the words horizontal or on an angle. Why not choose different colours of cardstock, or even mix up multiple word die cuts on the same design.
PRO TIP: It’s easier to line up words of a similar shape and height. But if you are not sure, practice on a test piece and lay out the die cuts to see if the shape of the words suits this technique.

Tip #2 – Word Pattern Background
Why not step it up and create a patterned background such as I did here. To get a tone on tone effect I simply die cut the same colours of cardstock for the pattern beneath as well as the word die cuts adhered on top.

Tip #3 – Focal Point
Do those HUGE die cut words leave you lost for inspiration? Guess what, it’s easy, simply make them the focal point of the design. You can also do some ‘surgery’ have you ever thought to cut these words into sections ? This is a great way to change them up and make sure they fit the card design. The eclipse technique is fantastic for these dies as they can be ‘hidden’ among the pattern of the card (let me know if you would like to see a video on this technique?).

Tip #4 – Add Details
You can also take advantage of these large word dies as they are perfect to add some fun details to. Today’s ‘hello’ got a little ombre treatment as well as some fun stamped lines to create a pattern on the word. Previously, I have also stamped ‘words’ directly onto these die cuts and that looks fab too!

Tip #5 – Critter Scene
While we are on the subject of large sentiment dies I have MORE fun ideas. This time I decided to create a scene an brought out some critters to ‘hold’ the sentiment. And another fun idea is to ‘sit’ a critter or image on top of the sentiment as I did in the previous card.

Tip #6 – Striped Sentiment
Step up these larger sentiments by creating your own striped cardstock. It’s easy, add some double sided tape to a piece of copy paper, then adhere strips of cardstock to it (this is a perfect way to use up scraps of cardstock).

Tip #7 – Sentiment Window
Have you ever thought about adding a die cut word to the ‘inside’ of your card? I wanted the word to be seen with the card closed so I simply die cut a circle on the front panel of the card.
There are so many fun ways to do this, but today I decided to use some Basic Shapes to create my own lifebuoy ring. Circles are easy and can be used for any word or image you may have. But you could also use other shapes such as stars, hearts or even shaped images with a coordinating die…

I like that I could see the decorated inside of the card when it is closed!

Tip #8 – Double Die Cut
This technique may be new to you! Negative space die cuts are such fun to play with and now that some word dies come with coordinating shadow dies we can create fun effects using these together… but not in the way that they are intended.
HOW? Die cut the ‘word’ first, make sure to keep all those little inside pieces of the letters (these are called counters). Then use the coordinating shadow die to die cut around the die cut word. This will give you a negative space word with a small border. You can use the die cut as is or step it up by adding a second die cut shadow beneath in the cardstock colour of your choice.

The only floral in today’s card collection and I went for a monochromatic clean and simple design.

It’s amazing how many styles of die cut words are available, so it’s good to have somewhere to kick start your creativity. Do you have a favourite, and are you going to try creating some cards using die cut words, I’d love to know in the comments below!

FABulous ways to use our words, Therese!!
=]
No that I ever stop lol.
Each and every one of these made me smile! A great use of those ‘words’, Therese!
Thank you Lisa, they were such fun to make!
Delightful ideas! I love them all, I can’t pick a favorite.
Thanks so very much!
Every idea was a keeper, Therese. I loved the first one and will be trying that one for some masculine cards.
Wonderful Bobby! AND a huge thank you, I had the most pleasant surprise when your card arrived yesterday, thank you so very much for thinking of me on my birthday, you are the sweetest my friend x
These are all great ideas and I love the cards. Can you tell me where the buoy and seagull and crab stamps and dies are from?
They are from Ellen Hutson, but she only sells through US Amazon. The names of the sets are written with the supplies at my blog. My apologies for the late reply we are away on holiday x
I hardly ever use my word dies even though I have quite the collection so once again you have inspired me to get the suckers out and have a go. Your cards are fabulous as always I’m especially loving the colour pallette you have used.
Marie
So glad you enjoyed these techniques my friend x
