Cardmaking Color Ideas: Warm vs Cool Floral Cards (+ Video Tutorial)

Here’s something you probably never thought you’d hear me say… today I’m making the same card twice.

Well, almost. The design is staying the same, but the colors are completely different – and I want to see how much that changes the mood of the card.

So… are you ready to see today’s cards?

Two floral cards made with the same design in different color palettes, one cool mint and teal and one warm coral and gold.

Cardmaking Color Ideas!

Today’s cards are a fun little warm vs cool experiment. I’m using the same floral design in two different ways – one with warm, sunny colors and a bit of dimension, and one with cooler tones for a softer background-style look.

It’s a simple way to see how color choices can completely change the feel of a handmade card.

Card #1 – Cool Color Floral Background

For my first card, I chose a fresh cool palette with minty greens, teals and blue-green tones. I kept the floral image flatter and more background-style, which gave the card a softer, calmer feel.

I started with a white cardstock panel and lightly blended minty green ink over the whole panel. You could easily create a similar look by stamping straight onto a light-colored cardstock panel instead.

For a better comparison between the two designs, I kept the sentiments the same and white heat embossed them onto black cardstock circles.

Card #2 – Warm Color Floral Focal Point

For my second card, I used the same floral image and layout, but changed the mood with a warmer color palette. This time I chose dusty coral red, golden yellow and warm green tones, then die cut the floral image twice so I could add extra dimension.

These warmer colors, along with that little bit of dimension, help the finished card feel more energetic than the cooler background-style design.

This time, I added a darker warm green piece of cardstock behind the floral panel. It helped the warmer colors look more vivid and gave the finished card a little more contrast.

More Color Inspiration?

I love how the same floral design can feel so different with a simple change of colors. It’s such an easy way to stretch your supplies and try new cardmaking color ideas.

I’ve also used this same stamp in another color palette, which helped inspire today’s cards. You can see that design here. 👈

Which version do you prefer – the cool mint and teal card, or the warmer coral and gold design? I’d love to know!

Til next time, crafty hugs,

Special thanks to my crafty assistant, Chad (aka ChatGPT), for helping me stay on track with my Gemini brain, grammar, and spelling… well, all the things! 😄
